The Role of Artists and Architects in Tribal Societies
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 7 page paper discussing the roles of artists and architects in tribal societies. When studying tribal forms of art and architecture, researchers are able to determine what roles artists and architects within the societies played and what the significance of the art and architecture showed. In many ways, by studying the roles artists and architects played and still play within tribal societies, archaeologists can also determine which aspects of the culture are considered significant in the portrayal of tribal life. Largely, artists and architects maintained a unique status within the tribes as those who could interpret the important and influencing spiritual, ancestral, and historical factors with the society and accurately and artistically include them in the functional items or structures they made.

The Sambia / A View on Masculinity & Maleness
[ send me this paper ]
The Sambia of New Guinea have a unique view of maleness and the process by which individuals move from an almost genderless state into masculinity. The initiation of boys into manhood is based in homosexual practices, and rituals require that boys shed their female qualities in order to progress as men. The comparison of the Sambian perspectives on male attributes, masculine development and on child abuse demonstrates cultural relativism and underscores significant variances in perceptions of appropriate and inappropriate behaviors, including child abuse. This 5 page paper considers the evidence presented by Gilbert Herdt in his study of the Sambia, and defines the link between their practices and a global view of sexual behaviors. Detailing the history of the first Marielitos, the paper then goes on to describe the different situation encountered by the 'new Marielitos' and the problems they encounter in trying to assimilate into American society; a society that frequently wishes they would be returned to Cuba. Similar information is also examined with regard to Haitian refugees and their own unique problems in assimilating to American culture. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
