Oceania at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts
[ send me this paper ]
( 5 pp.) The challenge presented to us in this
discussion is twofold: first to be an "art critic"
from the period when the art was first exhibited,
assuming that it had just been completed by the
artist; the second is to take a negative stance to
the work that I have just seen. The theories that
correspondingly present themselves from this type
of construction is to realize that any type of
artwork may be perceived differently from the time
it is first made until later perceptions in its
history. Obviously the work has not changed, but
the attitudes towards if may have. The second
idea is that in order to talk about something in a
negative way, I will in fact have to know
something about it first in a positive way.

Octavio Paz/Diego Rivera
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page research paper/essay that critiques how each man viewed Emiliano Zapata. The Labyrinth of Solitude is one of the most famous works by the noted Mexican author Octavio Paz. It is a collection of nine essays that are all concerned with the central theme of how one should understand Mexican identity, which translates in the book into understanding the quest for this understanding as an existential labyrinth, which leads inevitably to a profound feeling of solitude. Diego Rivera, through his art, also expresses a vision of Mexican identity. This discussion interprets Rivera's "Agrarian Leader Zapata" in light of the themes brought out in Paz's text. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Old Age as Depicted in Shakespeare's "King Lear" and Rembrandt's Self Portrait
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page observation that old age is a subject which can be presented quite differently by different forms of art and artists. While the graphic arts have the capability of best illustrating the physical effects of old age, literature can be contended to best represent the spiritual and social effects of old age. Perhaps the best contrast of this difference in presentation can be found in the work of two of the greatest artists of all time, Rembrandt and Shakespeare. While Rembrandt was a indisputable master of the canvas and brush, Shakespeare was a master of the pen. Two of their most obvious depictions of old age which can serve as a point of comparison are Shakespeare's "King Lear" and Rembrandt's self portrait during the latter years of his life.
