Our Multicultural Heritage: Reflections in the Theater
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page contention that America's multicultural heritage is reflected in practically every aspect of our daily lives. The arts, in particular, are a multicultural product. It might be contended, in fact, that the performing arts are the strongest reflection of the diversity of multicultural issues and ideologies that underpin American life. As a consequence, the image that we see there is relevant not only to the culture that produced it but to all Americans. Bibliography list 7 sources.

Perception, Memory And Time In the Sensual World
[ send me this paper ]
20 pages in length. Art is a language unto itself that speaks to the communal need for expression. Every individual -- no matter their origin or language -- has an inherent desire to express emotions, as well as to have these expressions understood. Art is such a universally recognized method of this statement that there exist no barriers with regard to interpretation. The mere fact that the human element is the primary implication in creating a particular work of art is enough of a connection to render any barrier obsolete; only when the erratic images of fractured time and space are again brought back into the mix are those boundaries erected once more. Clearly, the very essence of art transcends the otherwise finite and restrictive nature of expression; in order to bypass these barriers, one must reach beyond the limited scope of mortal time and space to achieve a more esoteric portrayal of perception, memory and time within the sensual world. Bibliography lists 19 sources.

Perception, Memory, and Time in the Sensual World
[ send me this paper ]
This 10 page paper has been written to continue an exploration of the influence of Eastern philosophy on the development of my artistic practice. However, it also brings together, my increased artistic fascination with the temporal concepts of the physical body in relationship to ideas about perception, memory and time in an increasing sensual world. As the viewer participates through, or within the art experience, his physical body is defining that new experience, through his own awareness of perception, memory and time, therefore each viewer/participant may receive not only their own sense, or perception of the experience, but the back-loop of memory and time as well. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Peter Blume: The Rock (1948)
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) It has been suggested that Peter Blume was
one of the first Americans to favor surrealism, in
his mature work. He has also been labeled a
"magic realist," which has a nice ring to it but
doesn't really tell us much. In this discussion we
will look at his 1948 painting, "The Rock," a
reaction both against the bombing of Hiroshima,
and a tribute to the human's tenacity to survive
man-made disaster.
Bibliography lists 7 sources plus 1 visual
(copy of painting discussed.)

Photographer Lewis Hine
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 3 page paper discussing the photography and the social issues addressed by Lewis Hine. Photographer Lewis Wickes Hine (1874-1940) was not only a photographer who achieved a certain artistry within his photographs but also addressed important social issues regarding humanity in the first half of the 20th century. Through his insightful images of the immigrants on Ellis Island at the turn of the century, the child laborers across the country, the devastating human aspects of World War I and the building of the Empire State Building during the Great Depression, Hine managed to open a nation’s eyes to the humanist concerns important within an industrial society which values its luxury but often has little regard for the human price to be paid in the production of such luxury.
Bibliography lists 3 sources.
