Myth, Symbol & Ritual/Shintoism
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page research paper that discusses the nature of myth and symbol in Shinto ritual. Japanese mythology, which plays a major role in Shinto beliefs, encompasses an intricate and complex system of beliefs. The Shinto pantheon consists of 8000 kami (Japanese for "gods" or "spirits") (Japanese mythology). The Kojiki ("Record of Ancient Things") is the oldest recognized book of Japanese myths, legends and history (Japanese mythology). One notable feature of Japanese mythology is that it explains the origin of the Imperial family, while also assigning them godhood (Japanese mythology). Unlike other national mythologies, in which there is a clear line that divides myth from everyday life, Shinto beliefs and ways of thinking are deeply intertwined with the subconscious social fabric of modern Japanese society (Shinto). Examination of Japanese myths, symbols and rituals illustrates this fact and how Shintoism continues to influence modern Japanese life. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Okinawa, Japan
[ send me this paper ]
15 pages in length. Much of the world's association with Okinawa, Japan is the ill-fated role it played in World War II. Beyond that historical component, many would be hard-pressed to bring forth any other pertinent information about the largest of all the Ryukyu Islands, a city "vivid reminders of a proud, thousand-year-old history tightly woven in the modern-day existence it displays today" (United States Marine Corps., 2005). Bibliography lists 13 sources.

Ono's "Shinto: The Kami Way"
[ send me this paper ]
4 pages in length. Defined as "the indigenous faith of the Japanese people" (Ono, 2004, p. 1), Shinto is both obscure and recognized at the same time, representing a duality unique to but a handful of global spirituality. This uncommon reality is duly noted in Ono's Shinto: The Kami Way, a primarily basic overview of the Japanese faith that, while wholly attributed to Japan, also reflects "a universality which can enrich the lives of all people everywhere" (Ono, 2004, p. 122). No additional sources cited.
