That grassroots effort did not merely materialize from the ether surrounding Montgomery, Alabama, however. It began more than a century earlier, well before the Civil War. The paper discusses the influence of Frederick Douglass; Plessy v Ferguson (1896); Brown v Board of Education (1954); the Montgomery bus boycott; and the effects of Southern tradition.
