Thirdly, Radical Republicans, comprised of northern politicians, were strongly opposed to slavery, unsympathetic to the conditions and consequences of the South, as well as desirous of maintaining their majority presence in Congress. President Andrew Johnson's major goal to unify the nation was to represent still another important political element at the end of the Civil War, while the final component was that of such groups as abolitionists and Quakers maintaining a strong motivation of principal and a belief in equality.
