Secession / Precursor to War
[ send me this paper ]
Scholars may argue forever over the legality of secession, but the fact is that before the Civil War the vast majority of Americans believed in the dictum set forth in the Declaration of Independence, that governments derive their just powers from the consent of the governed, and that forcing the South to remain in the Union was therefore tyrannical and immoral This 10 page paper presents the argument that the secession was a result of three major political influences. The issue of States Rights, slavery and the political agenda presented in the person of Abraham Lincoln. Although the first two were the presenting problems, the election of Lincoln was the deciding factor to secession. Bibliography lists 13 sources.

Segregation -- Myth Of The South
[ send me this paper ]
A 15 page paper discussing the myth of white supremacy in the South. The evil done in the name of race likely was not so much based in the delusions of white supremacy as in fear that such attitudes might in fact be groundless. Liberals of all colors later claimed that members of the black race deserved ongoing preferential treatment as retribution for '400 years of oppression,' a common phrase in the 1960s that manages to persist, though far more in the North today than in the South. The South may well be the most racially tolerant region of the country. It cannot be denied that the Ku Klux Klan burned crosses all across the South and terrified black families for years. It also cannot be denied, however, that their very methods were in themselves cowardly, reflecting the fear of the whites for the blacks—the cover of darkness was not enough; they had to have robes, too. Bibliography lists 14 sources.

Segregation: An American Reality
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page discussion of the cause of
segregation and its history in the United States. Distinguishes between
the natural tendency of groups toward segregation and the artificially
imposed segregation which results from one groups distrust or dislike of
another. Concludes that while the Civil Rights movement has brought
America a long way toward equality and integration, and has even
resulted in a change in laws to ensure integration, the social reality
is that segregation is still very much a fact of life in the United
States. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
