The Problem Of Passing As A Metaphor For The Dynamics Of Responsibility And Coming To Terms With Oneself

9 pages in length. Being the 'right' race has long been a barometer for how humanity looks at and defines itself. Even in global communities where blacks represent the primary ethnic group, there is nonetheless an intrinsic connotation of inferiority that materializes in the incidence of poverty, overpopulation and lack of education. These symbols of human inadequacy perpetuate in such a cyclical fashion that even when blacks reside alongside whites within otherwise more 'civilized' societies, the identifying mark of inferiority is inescapable. Philip Roth's Human Stain and Charles Johnson's Middle Passage clearly illustrate the extent to which the metaphorical use of 'passing' presents a problem in relation to the dynamics of responsibility and coming to terms with oneself, with the bottom line of each book exemplifying how, the moral choice in choosing one's destiny is comprised of much more than merely what one otherwise wants to do but instead is guided by the principles of social mandate. The Question of Identity of Olaudah Equiano in “The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano” (1789)

This is a 4 page paper discussing “The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa the African” and the inconsistent details within the narrative which make the reader question the identity of the author. “The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano or Gustavus Vassa the African” was written in English in 1789 and tells of Equiano’s life as a slave. Originally born in Benen, he was enslaved and suffered terribly but later managed to acquire enough learning and independence to become a major influence in advocating the end of the slave trade in Europe with the popularity of his narrative. Within the narrative however, there are several aspects and inconsistencies which bring into question the identity of its author. The narrative is extremely well narrated and written which leads to the authenticity of its narrator in regards to his educational background. The narrative also changes a great deal throughout in regards to formality of speech, first-person third-person shifts and his surprising reactions to others slaves in addition to be occasionally afforded liberty in his movements despite being a slave. Another possibility in regards to the narrative would be that while Equiano may have narrated it, it was written and published in England by someone who may have had a hand in its extensive editing to make it more acceptable within the English publishing market. The Scottsboro Boys' Trials and the Resulting Changes in the American Legal System

This is a 10 page paper discussing the changes in the American legal system as a result of the Scottsboro Boys trials. The Scottsboro Boys Trials from 1931-1938 revealed the injustice within American legal system in the false accusation of nine African American youths: namely, Haywood Patterson, Olin Montgomery, Andy Wright, Willie Roberson, Roy Wright, Eugene Williams, Ozzie Powell, Charles Weems and Clarence Norris, by two white women and the white Alabama court system. Through a series of trials and appeals for the nine boys, it became obvious to all concerned that the boys had not only been unjustly accused of raping the two white women but had also been treated unfairly within the legal system. The trials and appeals however did lead to two U.S. Supreme Court decisions based on the Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments to the Constitution which changed and improved American law forever especially in regards to equal rights to African Americans and all minorities. Firstly, the Supreme Court reversed an Alabama State court decision regarding defendants Ozzie Powell, Haywood Patterson and Charley Weems in Powell v. Alabama (1932) when it was deemed that they did not have adequate legal counsel for their trial thus paving the way in the years that followed that all defendants must have adequate legal representation for any crime which may result in a jail sentence if found guilty. Secondly, in a huge civil rights decision, in Norris v. Alabama (1935), the Supreme Court declared that the all-white jury rule in Alabama did not provide the boys with a fair trial by an impartial jury which eventually led to the end of jury restriction based on race throughout the country.
