Mexico’s Economic Development
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page paper discussing the present state of Mexico’s economy as well as likely future directions. Mexico’s economy has experienced wide swings in prosperity during the 1990s, and some of the promise of free trade has diminished in the past several years. Chinese manufacturing presents real threat to Mexico’s manufacturing industries, but little has been mentioned about Mexico’s other industries. If Mexico’s true advantage lies in just-in-time production, then it should be able to expand on that advantage. Manufacturing contracts with Chinese manufacturers require lead times stretching into years, and Mexico’s ability to be more responsive to customers may indeed be one of its most desirable characteristics. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Michael Porter’s Model and the 21st Century
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report
discusses the industrial economist and Harvard professor Michael
E. Porter who, in 1990, published “The Competitive Advantage of
Nations.” The book presented the model of a world and success in
that world that the events of the past decade have clearly
modified. Porter himself says: “Starting in the late 1980s, I
fell off the radar screen in terms of writing about strategy.”
This report looks at the reality of globalization in the modern
world and shows some of the ways in which Porter has modified his
thinking. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Microsoft in the People’s Republic of China
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper discussing Harvard Case 9-795-115. By 1993, computers were beginning to make themselves indispensable in Chinese business. The Chinese view was that the machines themselves needed to be purchased, but the information within them that caused them to operate should be a part of the machine, rather than a separate product for which they had to pay. Software piracy was rampant, to the extent that Microsoft’s Foxpro® was the leading product of its type in China, yet Microsoft had not sold a single legal copy in China. The paper recommends that Microsoft enter China, (1) gaining sales it would not otherwise have; (2) taking advantage of growing market share of US-based PC manufacturers; and (3) waiting for the Chinese government to take action against piracy in advance of its own foray into software development. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
