Turkle's "Can You Hear Me Now?" - Summary/Response
[ send me this paper ]
4 pages in length. Technology is taking over the task of being human. With the sweeping array of technological advancements over the recent past, people have become conveniently left out of their own lives. Turkle's article in Forbes entitled "Can You Hear Me Now" is a study in the disappearing act of human nature: The more technology removes the need for person-to-person interaction, the more people are becoming less and less capable of interacting with each other or themselves. Indeed, today's myriad modes of communication - e-mail, cell phones, texting - are considered a vast improvement in the way people exchange ideas and transmit information, however, Turkle points out how these transmissions are accomplished in a sort of automated fashion without any emotionally tangible connection to the recipient - or themselves. As man works feverishly to isolate humanity from itself in the name of progress, he moves equally as fast in the direction that will replace this fleeting interaction with a falsified intimacy tailored toward the robotic machines that only once existed in science fiction stories. It has many individuals, as well as corporations, greatly concerned as it limits the use of software that is available through the many different types of vendors. While it is generally agreed that there should be some sort of legislative action taking place, which controls computers and all technology that is linked with computers, most people feel that this particular act is not the answer to any serious concerns.
