The Shortcomings of State-Sponsored Lotteries: An Analysis of “Taking the Saps”, An Article by Russell Baker
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page analysis of the article by Russell Baker which originally appeared in the June 15, 1996 edition of the “New York Times”. Notes that although Baker uses a tongue-in-cheek approach to his argument against legalized gambling, his contention is not only fact based but supported by a number of other authors. This paper uses statistical fact and history to prove that the original contentions that state sponsored lotteries were the salve to soothe all financial woes are dead wrong. This approach supports Baker’s contention that it has now become explicitly clear that state sponsored lotteries are not all positive in terms of societal impacts. Concludes that probably even Baker does not believe some of his contentions that gambling provides some societal benefit when left in the realm of the criminal. Such points, however, provide a degree of entertainment value to his article, a value which is missing in many more fact-filled presentations of this argument. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

The Texas Prison System: May the Punishment Fit the Crime
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages. Because of the severe overcrowding of Texas prisons, the incidence of prison violence is becoming more and more common. In most cases it is the newer and weaker prisoners who are the victims of violence such as rape and gang beatings. In order to better correct this problem of prison violence, necessary actions would be to input basic prisoner information into the computer system such as what type group each prisoner should be housed with in order to ensure that the most violent of prisoners are kept with others of their kind, and the perpetrators of less violent crimes grouped accordingly. But is this a viable solution? This paper will deal with the topic of whether or not we should consider an inmate's crime and punish them accordingly. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
