Prison Privatization
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper arguing against prison privatization speaking from an administrator's perspective; arguing for it from a private manager's point of view; and assessing the challenges that privatization offers. Logically, it would seem that privatization would create conditions in which prisons can operate far more efficiently than when the prison is a function of state-level corrections and public law enforcement. Most research has focused either on cost or quality, but not on both. Whether privatization is more efficient still largely is a matter of perception. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Prison Staff: Coping With Their Jobs
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. There is, perhaps, a no more stressful, dangerous, mentally and physically exerting or violent job as that of a prison guard. Those who seek such a demanding position are made of more intestinal fortitude than the average human being, inasmuch as the day-to-day, in-your-face challenges of controlling angry, antisocial inmates takes a significant toll upon even the strongest of individuals. In an ongoing effort to combat the negative aspects of such overwhelming work-related tension, it is critical that prison guards learn to manage their stress levels. In general, people do not know how to allow their bodies to relax, which is a natural method of stress control; rather, guards are all too often in a constant state of tension with no available release for their penned up stress, which becomes a significant concern for their overall health. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Prison Violence and Policy
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page paper using the problem of prison violence to conduct an exercise in designing, implementing and evaluating policy changes. At least one author flatly states that prison violence is not affected by conditions of overcrowding, but that sole author appears to be a lone voice in his claims. Conventional wisdom and formal evidence indicate otherwise. Most inmates spend their days in boredom, and they are discouraged from preventing any violence that occurs within the prison. Policy change for education in critical thinking, utilitarianism and other abstractions is sought to be revealed in reduced prison violence. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

Prison: Keep Them Public Or Make Them Private?
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. The debate over prison ownership and which entity - public or private - is best suited for the job revolves around the issues of money and control, a duality that often does not promote the best interests of the stakeholders involved, not the least of which includes taxpayers, local and state governments, as well as the inmates themselves. Looking at the benefits and detriments of each potential 'landlord' brings forth a number of concerns that both support and deny each one as being the best choice, however, there are growing indications of how prison privatization is on the horizon of forthcoming decisions to be made in the interest of economically effective and cooperative facilities. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
