Rationale for a Student Assistance Program
[ send me this paper ]
A 13 page paper discussing the need for and
structuring of a Student Assistance Program (SAP) in the school setting. There are many and
varied programs available designed to help people of all ages deal with the stresses of life and
focusing specifically on drug and alcohol abuse. Though many such programs exist, a feature
common to most is that they are not well known in the communities they serve. Participation
commonly is in the form of a "sentence" imposed by some civil authority, and many individuals
already have lived most of their lives devoted to their specific addictions. Modeled on the
Employee Assistance Program (EAP) model, the SAP works to accomplish identification and
intervention much earlier, and on a voluntary basis in every case possible. Bibliography lists 6
sources.

Reaction To 12-Step Meeting
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. Expectations before attending the Alcoholics Anonymous meeting were to find a room full of sloppy, unkempt individuals who were considered to be on the fringe of civilized society. Not only was I prepared to avoid contact at all costs with these losers, but I was not even planning on staying for the entire meeting with the anticipation of being too repulsed by such mentally weak and physically slovenly individuals. I could not have been more wrong in my expectations, inasmuch as the meeting was filled with professional, well-groomed people who could well have been my own friends or family members. Reiman's "The Rich Get Richer And The Poor Get Prison" - Drugs
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Chapter I of Jeffrey Reiman's The Rich Get Richer and the Poor Get Prison addresses the very questions Americans have been asking ever since the so-called war on drugs was waged. What readers quickly realize is how the quest to control illegal drug use within various populations is - as with most other important issues - based upon very complex socioeconomic undercurrents. Answers do exist to the overwhelming drug problem, however, they are cocooned within such political rigmarole and manipulation that actually applying a solution is fraught with struggle. Reiman (2006) clearly acknowledges how imprisonment is hardly the answer, inasmuch as overpopulation is one of the most pressing issues in today's penal system. Instead, the answer is preventive rather than reactive: keep the problem from perpetuating by not treating the symptom but rather addressing the core issues. No additional sources cited.
