Political, Economic, Historical and Cultural Issues as Influences on the Trends, Policies and Reforms in the Educational System
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing factors influencing the trends in the educational system.
Political, economic and historical factors have had a great deal of influence on the trends and reforms which have occurred in the educational system over the course of time. Although education was a guaranteed right from each state in accordance with the U.S. Constitution, state legislation carefully implemented restrictions to certain populations within the general educational system. The 1950s and 1960s was a time which saw the greatest shift in the educational system due to a variety of factors. Firstly, the Civil Rights Movement led to the development of the rights of all citizens to an equal opportunity for education and the educational systems had to accommodate all citizens regardless of race and ability. Secondly, federal funding in regards to programs for the sciences increased dramatically upon the federal realization that the Soviet educational system was scientifically superior to that in the United States. Recently, the cultural shift which is taking place within the United States will also impact the educational system in regards to cultural policies, teacher education, linguistic programming, student population considerations and social programming among other factors influenced by the growing Hispanic population within the country.

Population Changes: Affect Upon California's Latino Students
[ send me this paper ]
9 pages in length. As a result of the changing demography of Latino students within California's school system, it has become apparent that other changes have also taken place due to this shift in population that adversely affect the academic needs of the Chicano/Latino population at the elementary, secondary and post secondary segments of the educational pipeline. Humanity has been enduring an ongoing battle for centuries: the strained relations among the races. Despite efforts to put the past behind, signs remain at nearly every juncture that there still exists a strong sense of racial dissension. While many Caucasians do not see the problem being as severe as it is represented, Latinos angrily reply that the lighter skinned race has not had to endure such prejudice and, therefore, cannot begin to identify with the situation. Caucasian Americans do not interpret racism as a big problem, therefore, they do not see a need for government intervention. Similarly other United States minorities believe they often receive unfair treatment, as well, because of their race. However, assimilation into the California school system presents yet another obstacle for the growing Latino population. The writer discusses issues of academic interference, as well as addresses potential solutions. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Possible Lives / Mike Rose's Perspectives on the Possibilities of the Young Mind
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page underscores the importance of Mike Rose's perspectives on children and the future of public education. It is Rose's assertion that children, especially children of color in impoverished communities, have had their possibilities stunted by the conditions of their upbringing and their exposure to underfunded public schools. But Rose's arguments are hopeful, and he views the opportunity for change and the possibility for success as major elements in his almost philosophical view of the current status of education. Preparing Students for the Job Market
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) Looking for work is a full time job in
itself, and not many people tell us that when we
begin the job search. Students who are entering
the job market must be aware of the job seeking
process, as well as have tools at their disposal
to avoid discouragement while they look for
employment. Are there ways which students can be
better prepared for this task? Our discussion will
examine that question.
Thesis statement: SCANS skills should be
incorporated into multi-discipline lesson plans.

Preventing School Violence: Program Proposal
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. The scope of gratuitous violence, which has typically extended only as far as the mutinous fringe of society, has crossed over into a heretofore untouchable population and spawned a new and alarming perspective upon violent behavior. The extent to which schools are now faced with the dual task of preventing brutal attacks while at the same time addressing the issue of violence from its core is both grand and far-reaching; that children and adolescents are committing acts of unspeakable brutality upon their classmates and teachers speaks to a tremendous breakdown in social and cultural principles. If adults are doing such a poor job at precluding school violence, the only logical alternative is to employ those who are more like-minded to those committing the criminal acts.
