Employment Outcomes of Ex-Offender JTPA Trainees
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page report discusses an article with the above title that examines
the relationship between trainees participating in the JTPA programs who were ex-offenders and had been incarcerated compared to non-offenders who faced other barriers to employment. Not surprisingly, research generally supported the assumption that
those without an arrest record were typically thought of more
highly, regardless of the qualifications or experience of a
person who had been convicted of a crime. Yet a surprisingly
little amount of research has actually been done on the issue. No
secondary sources.

English as a Second Language: Rules and Meaning
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page paper. Genre-based approaches to teaching English as a second language (ESL) have been used for some time, and of course there have been mixed results reported in the degree of success possible with the genre-based approach. The question that remains is which is more important for a second language speaker, knowing the rules or having access to the actual meaning. The answer appears to be that both are necessary to achieve effective communication that conveys the full message intended by the individual for whom English is not his native language. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

English Language Learners (ELL): Families And School
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Acquiring a well-rounded education a enough of a challenge when students speak the common language of a particular society, however, when students know their tongues from another country, it presents significant problems with their ability to learn without benefit of understanding the primary language. English Language Learners (ELLs) face this struggle on a daily basis for two main reasons: schools are not adequately equipped to reach and teach this particular population of special needs students and family at home often speaks their native language which leaves precious little opportunity for the students to improve upon their English. Even if it is a bilingual home, this only serves to encourage code-switching. Moreover, foreign culture often teaches children not to question authority, which leaves an ELL student without means to help himself. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
