Urban Heat Islands: Brazil
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The phenomenon of urban heat islands (UHI) is a wholly manmade occurrence derived from humanity's tendency toward urban living. Vast numbers of global communities live in what can only be described as asphalt jungles comprised of too many people, too much pavement, too many darkly colored surfaces on roofs, roads and parking lots that make it incapable for the surrounding environment to reflect heat. As a direct result, temperatures in these areas of urban sprawl can spike an entire eight degrees in the summer when compared to their suburban and rural counterparts. Brazil's overwhelming pollution problem is particularly associated with the notion of urban heat islands, inasmuch as this rise in heat sets off a chain reaction of chemical compounds being emitted into the air that become worse with every degree in temperature. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Urban Sprawl In Metropolitan Detroit
[ send me this paper ]
9 pages in length. The land developers and the environmentalist have yet to meet eye-to-eye on the issue of urban sprawl in metropolitan Detroit and likely never will. According to those who believe that environmentally sustainable cities are a workable solution, the concept will incorporate enough protective aspects to make it a worthwhile proposition. From the environmentalist point of view, however, as long as people continue to spread out into the land and development continues, there is absolutely no way the notion can hold up to its claims of wildlife protection and sustainability. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Urban Sprawl: Impact On Air Quality And Waterway Pollution
[ send me this paper ]
19 pages in length. The Industrial Revolution has long represented the deepest cut a double-edged sword can make; on the one hand, it established a no-boundaries approach to human progress while at the same time opened up myriad new and different ways for man to interact with the environment. However, this interaction soon took a turn for the worse as the environment fell into various stages of ruin with each subsequent step humanity made toward greater progress. Now with over six billion people inhabiting the planet, Earth's ecosystems are being systematically destroyed by the ever-growing girth of urban sprawl. Bibliography lists 13 sources.
