Health Care Reform - from the View of a Congressional Aide
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page report discusses national health care reform and the reasons it was not approved by Congress in 1994. Opponents such as the insurance industry, many sectors of the medical community, even attorneys, complained that any health care reform plan involving universal coverage requirements would necessarily require numerous administrative regulations. A failure to recognize such problems, they claimed, would lead to an out-of-control health system becoming even more of an economic and bureaucratic burden than it already was for consumers and the health care and insurance communities. The entire issue serves as an example of special interest lobbying, partisan conflict, and legislative posturing. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

Health Care Reform: Clinton And Truman
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. Health care reform has been a thorn in the nation's side ever since the development of private insurance and employer-supplied coverage after World War II. This union-supported venture did not sit well with subsequent presidents, such as Truman, who tried hard to reform health care so as to reflect a more comprehensive and viable commodity for all Americans. Clinton even took a shot at it, however, one might readily argue that his was the most catastrophic failure of all attempts made in past decades, with Johnson's passing of Medicare and Medicaid proving to be the only successful endeavor. The writer discusses health care reform as it relates to the Clinton and Truman Administrations. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Health Care, The Elderly And AARP
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The primary objective of a health care delivery system is "to enable all citizens to access health care services that are cost-effective and that meet certain preestablished standards of quality" (Shi et al, 1998, p. PG); however, the system has failed the elderly populace time and time again, rendering it necessary for political action committees (PACs) like the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to take charge of reform. The reason why some United States citizens are without any coverage in spite of the existence of public and private health insurance programs is because it is far too expensive if the individual is not being subsidized by an employer or is retired and unable to afford private insurance. Indeed, the United States health care market is referred to as "imperfect" because it does not allow for all people to take advantage of medical services -- only those who are either covered through employers or can afford their own private policies. The major players in the United States health services system -- which include physicians, health service institution administrators, insurance companies, large employers and the government -- are often at odds with one another and wholly unable to provide the necessary health care the elderly require. Bibliography lists 6 sources.
