Review of “From ‘Death Sentence’ to ‘Good Cancer’: Couples’ Transformation of a Prostate Cancer”

A 6 page paper assessing this qualitative study undertaken to assist in informing nursing practice. The focus of this study by Maliski, Heilemann & McCorkle (2002) was to gain insight on how couples coped with the diagnosis of prostate cancer and how they navigated through the decision-making process to prostatectomy and beyond. The investigation and design are sound, but the lack of previous research leaves the current researchers with little guidance in their own study. The paper concludes that the effort is a good one, but is not generalizable to the larger population in that its sample consisted only of a rather homogeneous group in terms of ethnic, socioeconomic and educational backgrounds. Review of “Improved Rates of Compliance with Hand Antisepsis Guidelines: A Three-Phase Observational Study”

A 6 page review and critique of an article published in the American Journal of Nursing in 2001. Researchers established baseline values regarding how often health care workers washed their hands in two ICUs in a single hospital; introduced a waterless alcohol-gel hand sanitizing agent; and recorded subsequent incidence of hand antisepsis following that introduction. They found that workers increased their hand antisepsis activities by a significant rate using a combination of soap-and-water washing and cleaning with the alcohol-gel agent. Review of “Occupational Stress and Job Satisfaction in Mental Health Nursing: Focussed (sic) Interventions via Evidence-based Assessment”

Cottrell (2000) provides a quite useful and highly relevant study directly applicable to the issue of stress among nurses. Though the author does not provide any research-supported follow-up on the intervention portion of the study, he provides alternatives that appear to be quite reasonable and naturally present the opportunity for further research in the future. The authors describe a qualitative study seeking to gain information about patients' views of catastrophic illness and injury. The paper analyzes problem statement, study purpose, sample selection, data collection, data analysis and the conclusions that the researchers draw. The study is good as a preliminary one, but the authors fail to address the issue of bias at any point. They still arrive at conclusions valuable to nursing, however. Bibliography lists 1 source.

Review of "Developing a Caregiving Tradition in Opposition to One's Past: Lessons from a Longitudinal Study of Teenage Mothers"

SmithBattle (2000) provides a touching narrative of the experiences of three teen mothers, but the effort should not be called a study. Review of "Don't Call Me Sweetie!"

A 6 page paper reviewing the report of an Australian study examining nurses' and patients' concept of nursing care. The researchers employed Q methodology, which combines qualitative and quantitative components to bring the study to conclusion. Much of the medical community still sees qualitative research as not being quite as "real" as quantitative study, and adding the quantitative component opens the study to being received by a wider range of individuals within the medical community.
