The History of Physical Education

programs in the schools started in the 18th century in Germany
and expanded to other European nations and the United States. In
the United States, a classical scholar trained in theology,
Charles Beck (1798-1866) Charles Follen (1795-1840) are thought
of as two of the first American physical education teachers and
were responsible for the creation of the first outdoor gymnasium
for children and the first college gymnasium (at Harvard). Since
that time, physical education and fitness have come to be
understood as essential components in a well-rounded education
