Obstructive Sleep Apnea
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Research findings indicate that nearly eighteen million Americans suffer with the dangerous and exhausting effects of sleep apnea, in which certain mechanical and structural problems in the airway cause the interruptions in breathing during sleep. Telltale signs of a potential problem include loud snoring, obesity, high blood pressure and a physical blockage of the nose, throat
or upper airway. Its prevalence appears to be genetic to some degree; however, its appearance in overweight patients also indicates that its composition is rooted in both genetics and environment. The writer discusses cause, diagnosis, treatment and long-term consequences of
obstructive sleep apnea. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Occupational Asthma
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. One of the most important discoveries of late is that of workplace influence when it comes to asthma attacks. Experts address the reasons why the office may be one of the most hazardous places to be for an asthmatic, inasmuch as two to fifteen percent of all new asthma cases are the direct result of occupational irritants. The lungs are attacked on a regular basis in the
workplace setting from 240 reactive chemicals or natural proteins. In order to combat this assault, businesses are urged to 1) assess the workplace and 2) address and eliminate the causative agent(s). Bibliography lists 12 sources.

Occupational Safety in the UK's Construction Industry
[ send me this paper ]
A 15 page
paper discussing Britain's efforts to devise effective rules for increased safety while
maintaining common sense. Narrow and immediate issues of workplace safety rest with
individual workers and their employers' management of active safety issues, but they also
extend to greater levels as evidenced by rules applying to consultants and designers.
Mandatory certifications can work to improve safety records of construction firms, as can
greater awareness of safety issues by all involved, workers and managers alike. The trend
toward identifying best practices and methods of assessing risk is sound, but UK's regulatory
agencies will need to look to OSHA as example of regulations that often are
counterproductive. Bibliography lists 13 sources.
