Social Oppression and Mental Health Therapy
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing social oppression and mental health therapy. Social oppression is prominent within the society of the United States and exists is various forms such as racism, classism, sexism and heterosexism. Social oppression within society has led to the self destructive behaviors of minorities because of overwhelming feelings of isolation, alienation, dual self identity and feeling powerless. Historically, mental health therapies have relied upon the assumptions of individualistic centered treatments which were developed in the 19th century for white middle class clients. Recently, mental health practitioners have been trying to develop guidelines which will help in the treatment of clients from socially oppressive situations. Studies involving populations of African Americans, Asians and women have found that individualistic approaches should be abandoned for treatments which include total assessment of all factors (ecosystems) which influence the lives of the clients and which have led to their oppression. These factors must be assessed and changed to attain a successful treatment.

Social Problems and the Media -- The Global Issue of HIV and
AIDS
[ send me this paper ]
This 8 page report discusses the fact that in less than
two decades, the pandemic of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
infection has become an international health, social, and
economic emergency. Not surprisingly, media coverage of AIDS, the
impact of the disease, and research into the human
immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has become an important channel of
communication regarding treatment, research breakthroughs, and
the development of new treatments. However, attention to the
impact of HIV infection and AIDS in Third World nations has been
less than comprehensive and exemplifies the ways in which the
media (and society, in general) tends to neglect the devastating
impact of the disease in places such as sub-Saharan Africa.

Socialized Medicine: Advantages/Disadvantages
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. Because of the huge interest in
socialized health care over recent years, many hospitals and physicians are drawn to the program. The reasons most of them state for this interest are to share financial risk, contract directly with employers, enhance the quality of care and promote collaboration with medical staff. In spite of these good reasons, however, the lack of administrative assistance necessary to manage the costs associated with socialized health care could force many hospitals to take a second look at these problems prior to committing themselves. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
