Brownsville, Brooklyn
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page book review that argues that Wendell Pritchett's goal in his text Brownsville, Brooklyn: Blacks, Jews and the Changing Face of the Ghetto-- a community study of a section of Brooklyn, New York known as Brownsville --is to provide a complete sociological profile of this neighborhood. Pritchett begins in the late nineteenth century and carries the history of the neighborhood forward to the present, addressing significant events. The principal point of Pritchett's analysis is found in the relationship, over time, between the faculties of human agency and bureaucratic public policymaking, as the residents of Brownsville's ever-changing populace endeavored to construct a sustainable community in the face of governmental ineptitude and misconceived urban policies. Business and Economy in Oman
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page paper discussing the economy-building activities of one of the Gulf states. The Sultanate of Oman is a small country nearly equating in land mass to the US state of Kansas, bordering Saudi Arabia on the East. Sultan Qaboos bin Said determined shortly after coming to power in 1970 that Oman's best interests were not served by being fully dependent on oil for its national income. The Sultan stresses private sector development and self-reliance, encouraging the people to be self-sufficient so that the nation can be as well. The nation is fully open to foreign investment, development of local non-oil industry and privatization of public holdings. Noted for its traditions of fairness and political stability, Oman provides conditions favorable for both international and domestic economic development. Bibliography lists 9 sources.

Business Effect of Russia's Lack of Infrastructure
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper examining the lack of information management infrastructure as a factor contributing to the vastly uneven growth of the economy before its financial collapse in 1998. Many individual businesses were well equipped with the technological standards of business today, but they were concentrated in only a few major industries. All other segments of the economy did not fully share that good fortune—not only was infrastructure lacking in many areas but where it did exist there often were no qualified technical personnel to manage them. Observers believe that Russia will fare much better when the economy grows again. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
