The US Annexation of Hawaii
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page overview of the economic and political factors surrounding the 1898 US annexation of Hawaii. Because of its location and tremendously productive environment, Hawaii is a strategically important military and economic accouterment. The sugar industry which existed at the time of annexation were obvious factors in the desirability of Hawaii to both the United States and Japan. Equally as important, however, was the strategic location of the islands from a military perspective. Outlines the growing Japanese presence in Hawaii in the years preceding annexation and contends that if the decision had not have been made to annex Hawaii the Japanese would have taken the islands. Notes the duality of impacts of US annexation including the tremendous cultural and physical impacts sustained by the Hawaiian people. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

The Vietnam War: Soldiers’ Experiences
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page analysis of the manner in which the Vietnam War differed in terms of its effect on those that fought. Uses several memoires of the war to explore the factors which made this war different in terms of its psychological impact on its soldiers. The author observes that those that initially had little in common with those with whom they served returned after their tours of duty isolated from friends, family, and society at large. They found identification only with those individuals alongside whom they had served and the circumstances which had shaped them. The reasons for this are many but they revolve around the politics of the war and the American public’s resentment of it. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
