Weintraub/Forgotten War
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page analysis of an article by Stanley Weintraub, "How to Remember the Forgotten War" (American Heritage, 2000), which concerns the historical evaluation that the Korean War was a draw. Weintraub argues that Korea was a victory due to the fact that the US achieved its goal to push North Korea back to the 38th parallel. Other reasons are discussed as well, but the writer feels that the article is insightful primarily because it emphasizes the human foibles, ideologies, and motivations that provided the context for the war. Western Exploration 1800-1845
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper discussing the Lewis and Clark expedition in 1804 and the opening of the Oregon trail more than 30 years later. America was in expansion mode, and going West was the only possible action with which to follow the Louisiana Purchase. Lewis and Clark explored much of the Northwest territory and made friendly contact with the native groups along the way, but those groups grew fearful of consequences after only a few hundred had passed through their lands. Thomas Jefferson established government contracting for scientific experimentation with Lewis and Clark's expedition, and the opening of the Oregon Trail established an enduring population base in the far West. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Westward Expansion And The Civil War
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page paper. The causes of the civil war were many and complex. Three overriding issues were at the heart of conflict between north and south: tariffs, power in the federal government, and the expansion of slavery. Slavery had been a part of the southern culture for 200 years; these states found it intolerable when laws prohibiting the expansion of slavery into western territories were adopted. The states had become a nation through a series of compromises and it was through more compromises that the union stayed intact until 1861. This essay explains how the westward movement acted as one cause of the Civil War. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
