The Modern Post-War Empire
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses the fact that if an empire can best be defined by its dominance, its influence, and, of course, its power, then the post World War II realities of the United States impact on the world would certainly appear to qualify it as an “empire.” When considered in the context of “empire,” there are a number of factors that should be examined. For example, the end of the Cold War, the dissolution of the Soviet Union, even the technological advancements that have taken place have all served to shift the focus from military-motivated development and progress to a more globalized interdependence. Bibliography lists only one source.

The Nazis' Most Evil One
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page paper discussing Josef Mengele, the "Angel of Death" of Auschwitz. Mengele escaped the Allies who liberated Auschwitz and the fled to South America where he lived out his days and died a natural death. His remains were examined in 1985, but many refused to believe that Mengele finally had been found until DNA testing in 1992 confirmed that the remains were indeed those of Mengele. Mengele's penchant for twins led him to perform horrendous experiments on them, including killing one by various means while using the other as a control. His human experimentation was not limited to twins. He was interested in any morphological oddity, and he also strove to discover how long a newborn baby could live without food. The paper gives an outline of his background, "research" interests and activities at Auschwitz. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

The Non-Violent Opposition to the Ruhrkampf Occupation of 1923
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 4 page paper discussing the non-violent opposition to the Ruhrkampf occupation. The occupation of the Ruhr, one of Germany’s chief industrial centers, from 1923 to 1925 is one of the significant examples of non-violent opposition (called the Ruhrkampf) to occupation in post World War I Europe. The Versailles Treaty after World War I required that Germany pay reparations to the allies who were victorious in the war. Due to disastrous economic conditions after the war however, Germany was unable to make any payments and therefore defaulted. As a response to the default in payments, French and Belgian troops occupied the Ruhr region in Germany near the French and Belgium borders. Unable to militarily respond to the occupation, the German government instead called for non-cooperation and resistance to the occupation which lead to a further economic decline in the region. The resistance was also met violently by the French whose actions in the region were unpopular internationally and within France as well. The resistance to the forces led eventually to a new reparation agreement and the withdrawal of occupying forces. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

The Origins and Cultural Implications of the Cold War
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing the origins and cultural implications of the Cold War based mainly on the texts of Brower and Moss. The Cold War originated in the ashes of the Second World War when the countries devastated by war and those formerly occupied by German or Japanese forces were forming new alliances with the Allies or were trying to end their history of colonization. The United States and Russia supported decolonization while at the same time understood the value of strong alliances. The United States, France, Britain and West Germany formed an alliance in Europe and for the first time excluded the Soviets based on their Communist ideals and politics. Stalin was equally determined to form strong global alliances in his defence of mother Russia and in so doing the Iron Curtain was formed dividing Europe. The political and economic division continued and escalated for over forty years with the United States and the Western European states forming NATO as a coalition against the threat and force of Communism. The existence of the Cold War did not only have an affect on politics, economics and international relations but also affected greatly the social and cultural developments between the different cultures. In the United States, anti-Soviet themes were the basis of many Hollywood productions which were mirrored by the anti-American plays being produced in the Soviet Union. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
