The American Labor Movement
[ send me this paper ]
(5 pp) The history of the American Labor Movement
seems to be one of action and then reaction The
second attempt at unionizing workers was called The
Noble and Holy Order of the Knights of Labor, it
began inauspiciously in 1869 as a secret society,
with a private ritual, passwords, and a grip.
Secrecy, which continued until 1881, would
forestall possible reprisals by employers.
The Knights excluded only liquor dealers, p
rofessional gamblers, lawyers,bankers, and
stockbrokers, and sang the song: Hurrah, hurrah,
for labor, it is mustering all its powers, And
shall march along to victory with the banner of
eight hours. Times have moved from stressing the
rights of the American worker to stressing the
rights of the American working family.
