Plea Bargaining/ Does it Work?
[ send me this paper ]
A 15 page research paper that examines the heated national debate over the efficacy of plea bargaining. Proponents of plea bargaining argue that, with the volume of cases facing the US judicial system, without plea bargaining, the courts would become hopelessly backlogged. On the other hand, opponents to this fixture of the judicial system question whether the pragmatism of plea bargaining is "undermining justice" rather then serving it. These, and more, questions are examined. Bibliography lists 10 sources.

Plea Bargaining: Unfair Advantage For Criminals
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The scenario is all too familiar: The prosecuting attorney knows he has a viable case to take to trial whereby a strong sentence will be imposed, yet he is conflicted with the peripheral - and highly influential - aspects of taxpayer costs and prison overcrowding if he take this case all the way through the system. Instead, he cuts a deal with the defense attorney's client to serve a reduced sentence in exchange for the alleged perpetrator's guilty plea. The inevitable outcome is such that the offender - who has now admitted to his crime - serves a fraction of the sentence he should have received - and even sometimes does alternative punishment outside of prison - allowing for the system to be relieved of one more inmate and the taxpayers to avoid footing the bill of a lengthy and expensive trial. But the question remains: Has justice truly been served when the criminal does not receive the appropriate sentence through the option of plea bargaining? Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Police Ethics
[ send me this paper ]
14 pages in length. Law enforcement exists in order to provide community protection and ameliorate situations that prove to threaten social accord. When the very individuals who are supposed to uphold this duty are the ones perpetuating the problem, the fine line that already exists between criminality and lawfulness becomes blurred to such an extent that there ends up being little difference between the two sides. Indeed, police are bound by a code of ethics that helps maintain a sense of equity and morality; when that code is breached and officers act as though they are above the law, the fundamental essence of civil safety stands in great peril. Bibliography lists 8 sources.
