[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page report discusses the Symbolism in Zora Neal Hurston's "Their Eyes Were Watching God" (1937). Hurston’s remarkable sense of imagery and symbolism that she purposefully uses supports the overall theme of the book and adds to the unique points-of-view it represents. In fact, it is her use of symbols that serves to best represent the multiplicity of layers that Hurston’s work allows the reader to peel apart, always finding a new potential for interpretation and implication. Symbolism/Oedipus and Hamlet
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page essay that contrasts and compares the use of symbolism in Sophocles' Oedipus Rex and Shakespeare's Hamlet. The writer argues that both of these playwrights make their points concerning human nature via their use of imagery and symbolism. Sophocles uses the imagery of sight to dramatically illustrate the problems that Oedipus has with perceiving the truth of his situation. Likewise, Shakespeare uses the symbolic element of poison to convey the corruption that pervades the character of Hamlet's uncle and king and which poisons the mind of the young prince. In both plays, symbolism refers to the issue of incest. No additional sources cited.

Symbols and Symbolism as Indicative of Key Themes in Ibsen’s “A Doll’s House” and Anouilh’s “Antigone”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 7 page paper discussing symbols and symbolism in relation to the themes found in Henrik Ibsen’s play “A Doll’s House” and Jean Anouilh’s play “Antigone”. Both Ibsen in “A Doll’s House” and Anouilh in “Antigone” use symbolism to express themes throughout their plays. The central characters of Nora and Antigone are both seen as childish in their use of childhood items such as Nora playing hide and seek and Antigone using a small shovel and child’s clothing. Their symbolism is much deeper however as both characters also symbolize the societies at the time the plays were written. Nora’s character is constantly being referred to using animal imagery and her hiding of objects from her husband depicts the theme of her inequality in her household and the inequality of women in the 1800s. Antigone’s character symbolizes the French resistance and the sacrifice she had to make to remain true to her ideals against the oppressive king, or in France’s case, the occupying Germans. Bibliography lists 7 sources.
