Anzaldua/Letter to 3rd World Women Writers
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page summary and commentary on Glorida Anzaldua's 1980 letter to her fellow women writers of color, which focuses on how this writer feels connected through the written word to all Third World women writers, no matter where they are located in the world. Roughly in the middle of this extended letter, Anzaldua inserts a "journal entry," in which she personifies her pen and addresses it directly. This metaphor serves to accurately and concisely sum up the points that Anzaldua previously expresses in this letter. No additional sources cited.

Anzia Yezierska's "Bread Givers"
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Anzia Yezierska's Bread Givers attacks several social norms of both her traditional Polish homeland and the American life her protagonist has come to know. Clearly autobiographical, Bread Givers boldly questions why certain social and religious traditions continue throughout the centuries without the slightest consideration for an individual's interests or desires. Sara's traditional Jewish upbringing exposed her to a life dominated by patriarchal control; when she arrived in New York to seek out the American Dream, she found that once again her gender would stand in the way of such desires. Aphra Behn's "Oroonoko" Compared To Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels" - Self/Other Dichotomy
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. The self/other dichotomy is present in myriad forms throughout literary history, but perhaps nowhere is it better illustrated then within the context of Aphra Behn's Oroonoko and Jonathan Swift's Gulliver's Travels, two pertinent examples of how the respective authors can uphold the same approach yet do so in quite different ways. Behn seeks to remove herself from other authors of her genre who characterize themselves as social elitists in relation to the sorry, uncivilized masses they deem as being inferior. In this quest, Behn maintains the self/other differentiation by way of infusing the protagonist with the two elements that demarcate precisely the objective she seeks: education and beauty. Swift, by comparison, does much the same to support the self/other dichotomy, however, he accomplishes this by pointing out the flaws that comprise Gulliver's very being.
