D. H. Lawrence's "The Rocking-Horse Winner" And Flannery O'Connor's "The Lame Shall Enter First": Money
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Money's presence in D. H. Lawrence's "The Rocking-Horse Winner" and Flannery O'Connor's "The Lame Shall Enter First" illustrates how people become far too dependent upon its purported ability to ease life's problems. While both stories provide perfect examples of the way in which contemporary culture has turned into a money-dependent society, Lawrence's "The Rocking-Horse Winner" badgers the point home with such force that the reader suspects from the very start how significant a role money will play in the characters' ultimate conflict. Similarly, O'Connor's "The Lame Shall Enter First" captures the essence of depravation, as well, when Rufus refuses to accept the valuable telescope Sheppard gives him so that he might become "enlightened." D.H. Hwang/M. Butterfly
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page research paper that analyzes D.H. Hwang's play M. Butterfly in terms of gender criticism. The writer explains how the play is based on a real-life occurrence in which a French diplomat was convicted of espionage, and how the Frenchman had a twenty year liaison with a Chinese male spy, whom he thought of as the "ideal" woman. In his play, Hwang argues that the diplomat projected a Western concept of an idealized femininity that not only represents the "ideal" woman, but the East in general. Therefore, the Chinese spy was able to manipulate the diplomat perfect by playing to his cultural and gender prejudices. Bibliography lists 8 sources.

D.H. Lawrence And James Joyce
[ send me this paper ]
D.H. Lawrence's Sons And Lovers and James Joyce's A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man share a similarity between them that is central to understanding the protagonists. This 5 page paper argues that the metafictional endeavors of both of the main characters is to make claims for their autonomy. The inward analysis that each wallows in does not imply self-consciousness, but rather the belief in the significance of living as an individual. No additional sources are listed.
