Jean Paul Sartre’s “The Wall”
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses Jean
Paul Sartre’s short story, “The Wall,” which takes place during
the 1930s in the era of the Spanish Civil War. Three men are
arrested, placed on trial, and sentenced to death for rather
nebulous political reasons. The authorities are prepared to
execute people for little or no reason whatsoever, and this lack
of causality -- so predominant in existentialism -- is a favorite
theme of Sartre’s. “The Wall” serves as an excellent example of
existential writing in that we are what we are, what happens,
happens, and what you see is what you get. Bibliography lists 3
sources.

Jean Toomer's "Cane"
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. Toomer's poetry is often seen as quiet and pastoral, dealing with tranquil aspects of existence. There is however, another side of his work: dealing with racial conflict between human beings. The exact manner in which Toomer reveals this conflict with respect to the
northern section, one can infer that is an integral
component to the author's overall mystique, utilizing such literary techniques as dialogue, imagery, as well as figurative language and pastoral interpretation. Toomer's "Cane," unarguably his greatest work, is a book of rare
lyricism and poetry in which Toomer seems completely in command of both his poetic language and the vernacular he uses for dialogue. Clearly, Toomer shared the same problems associated with race as did his other literary counterparts. Upon looking at a photo of Toomer, one would see a handsome man who could very easily pass for white. Throughout his life, however, Toomer staunchly refused to specify his race when asked to do so; it could be argued that he refused to even acknowledge that he belonged to one. Jean-Paul Sartre/The Flies
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that discusses Jean-Paul Sartre's play "The Flies" draws upon the ancient Greek legend of Orestes, as told by Aeschylus in his classic play of the same name. However, Sartre changes the focus of the ancient story in order to stress thematic points that are drawn from his existentialist philosophy. Examination of "The Flies" indicates that the principle thematic points that Sartre makes in this work pertain to his idea existence preceding essence and how this idea can be associated with the concept of freedom (thesis statement). This thematic thrust becomes particularly evident when the overall structure of the play is considered. First of all, Orestes is presented with a predetermined situation over which he has had no input or control. Secondly, he realizes that whether or not he acts is his choice; he is free to choose. He then comes to the realization that by choosing he frees himself, as well as the city. No additional sources cited.

A 5 page paper which examines
Jeanette Winterson's book "The Passion" as it addresses the lure of childhood. The

childhood mesmerizes the characters as they find what passion and happiness they can
through their passionate love of one another, somewhat compensating for the fact that
they are no longer innocent and happy as children. No additional sources cited.

Jeff Shaara's "Gods And Generals"
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. In conjunction with his father's literary masterpiece "The Killer Angels," Jeff Shaara's "Gods and Generals" takes a decidedly deeper look into the individuals whose lives were altered by – as well as responsible for – the American Civil War. The young Shaara's purpose for writing this follow-up to his father's work is to uncover the more humanistic elements of battle that twentieth century history books never unveil. Indeed, the extent to which the reader gains a significantly better understanding of what occurred from within each man's thought process completely departs from what is typically taught about the historical event, as well as adds a great deal to realizing the consequence of mortality. Bibliography lists 2 sources.
