Joan of Arc
[ send me this paper ]
A 10 page research paper that offers an overview of the life of Joan of Arc, a simple sixteen-year-old peasant French peasant girl who could neither read nor write, but who managed to inspire and lead the French army to victory in a long protracted fifteenth century war with the English, continues to fascinate writers and audiences. This is principally due to the fact that Joan’s story contains so many incongruities and questions. Originally, she was condemned as a heretic, but was later canonized as a saint. Her exploits occurred during a time of extreme class and gender prejudice, but Joan was not only a peasant but also a woman. The very act of wearing men’s clothes was sufficient at that time to be used as a rationalization for heresy and this contributed to Joan’s sentence of death, even though she assumed this clothing in order to protect her modesty and chastity. This examination of Joan of Arc looks first at what is known in the historical record pertaining to her life and the influence that Joan’s legend has had various writers. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Jocasta vs. Phaedra / Comparison of Two Tragic Characters
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page comparison of character and suicide between Queen Jocasta (Oedipus the King) and Queen Phaedra (Hippolytus). The writer argues that in both instances, the Queen was a lovelorn woman; deeply frustrated and in the end, completely desperate. Jocasta's death, however, was more sudden and rash when compared with the suicide of Phaedra who had accumulated such tendencies throughout the progression of her story. No Bibliography.

Jocasta/Maternity in Oedipus Rex
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page essay that discusses the role of Jocasta in Oedipus Rex. The writer argues that Sophocles uses his characterization of Jocasta, Oedipus' wife/mother, to underscore the principal themes of the play. Jocasta is a powerful maternal figure in the saga, representing ancient Greek values that defined fealty to the family as one of the highest virtues. While Jocasta appears on stage in only a few scenes, her behavior underscores the depth of the sin committed not only by Oedipus, but also by his biological father Laius. No additional sources cited.

John Cheever's "Goodbye, My Brother" And "The Seaside Houses": Symbolic Nature Of Water
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Acclaimed American writer John Cheever is a master at employing symbolic meaning throughout his works. Within the literary boundaries of Goodbye, My Brother and The Seaside Houses, Cheever utilizes water as the primary symbolic element, clearly demonstrating how the ebb and flow of the ocean's incalculable presence is directly related to the ebb and flow of human existence. Coupled with the ironic tone is a style rich in diversity, for Cheever easily and masterfully juggles control from one character to another, establishing the final conclusion to be anyone's guess. The author symbolically depicts his characters as having no real place in this world other than their own myopic existence; it is through the power of his writing that he helps to develop a certain vulnerability in connect with their plight.
