Upon a first reading of “A White Heron,” one can make the assumption that the deceptively simple piece is quite nearly a children’s story and not much more. But from a larger or community perspective, the story is about the socialization of girls, the training to fulfill a man’s desires, the balance of power between the sexes, and the need for women to be true to their nature. Emily Dickinson’s short poem, “A Light Exists in Spring” is also used compared to the short story. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
