"What To The Slave Is The Fourth Of July?" And "Ar'n't I A Woman?": Compare/Contrast
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. As two of the most outspoken and unforgettable figures in black history, Sojourner Truth and Frederick Douglass both sought to bring about cultural, social and gender change to an otherwise intolerant white society. Their literary efforts, forever bound and protected by time, have chronicled the struggles inherent to black Americans since the beginning of the slave trade; that their personal experiences mirror the horrors taught from schoolbooks all across the country make their respective appeals for racial equity that much more poignant. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

"White Noise": A Critical Essay on the Book by Don DeLillo
[ send me this paper ]
Describes this book as a testament to the cultural void in which we conduct our contemporary lives. The book is centered around the life of a family who is, to say the least, an odd assortment of individuals who appear to attract the company of even odder individuals. These lives are shaped to a large degree by an ever present consumerism and the ironic and philosophical view of death. No additional sources are listed.

1984/2014
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that looks at two chilling visions of life in a fascist state. In George Orwell's chilling novel 1984, he describes life in England under totalitarian rule, where the elite rule with authoritarian control and Big Brother, as a symbol of the state, watches and keeps track of every detail of citizens' personal lives. In her 2004 novel, America 2014, An Orwellian Tale, Dawn Blair proposes that a similar transformation takes over the United States. The premise of Blair's text is that, with the rationalization that authoritarianism is justified by the war on terrorism, America will exchange its freedoms for the illusion of security and become a one-party, totalitarian state. The writer briefly looks at both novels and then discusses whether or not the US is endanger of becoming totalitarian. Citing a recent article, the writer feels that this is a real threat and that Orwell and Blair's books should be considered as accurate warnings. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
