Octavia Butler’s “Dawn” and the Theme of Slavery
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page
report discusses Octavia Butler’s 1987 novel “Dawn” in which she
presents the theme of slavery in the service of another beings’
hierarchy and sense of survival and order. “dawn” became the
first book in a trilogy, followed by “Adulthood Rites” (1988) and
“Imago” (1989). Nuclear war has decimated Earth in “Dawn” and
human beings are almost extinct. “People” from another planet
arrive and set about saving the humans and restoring the
environment of Earth. They place most of the humans into
suspended animation so they can begin the laborious processes
required for the planet’s recovery. However, the aliens have
their own agenda and that is to enslave humans to meet their own
needs. Themes of slavery are constantly present in “Dawn” and
present a ways to reconsider the horrors and absolute subjugation
that is slavery. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Oedipus Rex & Darker Face of the Earth
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page essay that discusses Rita Dove’s 1994 play “The Darker Face of the Earth,” which mirrors many of the themes and plot devices that occur in ancient Greek play by Sophocles’ “Oedipus Rex.” In both plays, the work of fate and destiny are evident in a manner that suggests that while the protagonists in both works are the victims of these forces, they are also agents of freewill. The fate of each man evolves with his own personal behavior and largely from the way in which he rejects the aspects the moral standards of his culture. As this suggests, even though Oedipus and Augustus are born into circumstances that are beyond their control, situations that were created by their parents, each man has freewill and the choices he makes are instrumental in bringing about his fate. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Olsen & Tyler On Being a Parent
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page essay that argues that 2 short stories, "I Stand Here Ironing" by Tillie Olsen and "Teenage Wasteland" by Anne Tyler, address the same theme, which focuses on the reactions of parents to having a troubled teen. In each story, the author not only describes the teen's problems, but also stresses how society and authority figures will offer definitive instruction on how to handle raising children, but then just as definitively blame the parents if these dictums fail to produce a perfect adolescent. Society wants to allocate blame, but, as these two stories demonstrate, sometimes there are forces that are outside of parental control. No additional sources cited.
