Poe and The Masque of the Red Death
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page research paper/essay that examines Edgar Allan Poe’s short story “The Masque of the Red Death.” This short story has been extensively interpreted as an allegory by scholarship. Situated within a canon that is renowned for its chilling effect on the reader, as well as Poe’s often enigmatic plots, “The Masque of the Red Death” can also be viewed as representing the apex of this thematic trend in Poe’s work as this story can be interpreted as the embodiment of humanity’s instinctive reaction against the knowledge that everyone will eventually succumb to death’s ultimate dominion. This interpretation becomes evident by examining the structure of the narrative, the characterization and, most prominently, by the way in which Poe suggests the identity of the narrator. Poe and Whitman/On Science
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page essay that compares and contrasts 2 poems by Poe and Whitman. Poe's "Sonnet--To Science" and Whitman's "When I heard the Learn'd Astronomer," address not only the same subject matter, but also they take an identical stand on the topic. While Poe's poem is the most overt in its message, Whitman also takes the stand that science, specifically astronomy, attempts to drain the beauty and mystery from life and turns the wondrous into the mundane. The paper points out that satire is an unusual genre for Poe, although the story is typically macabre; but, in addition to being a gentle jibe at Transcendentalism, this story argues that not all fiction must have an obvious moral to have merit. Poe's "Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat"
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper which compares Edgar
Allan Poe's "The Tell-Tale Heart" and "The Black Cat" illustrating that the two stories
involve what Poe termed the "spirit of perverseness." The paper examines how both
narrators are trying to lay blame on something other than themselves for their inherent
personalities. Their attempt to blame, and kill, only comes back to haunt them.

Poe's Cask of Amontillado
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page research paper/essay that presents an argument concerning the correct interpretation of Poe's famous short story. The scholarly interpretations that have been penned regarding Edgar Allan Poe's famous and enigmatic short story "A Cask of Amontillado" are numerous. Some critics focus on the irrationality of Montresor's behavior, while others, such as John Gruesser, argue that Montresor suffered from a guilty conscience when he made his confession and that "Fortunato literally and figuratively gets the last laugh in the tale because he knows that lies ahead for Montresor and himself in the next world" (Gruesser 129). Rather than take this position regarding the meaning of the story, it seems truer to the tone of the narrative, as well as Poe's careful characterization of Montresor, to argue that Montresor saw himself as being the hand of God in the enactment of his revenge, but that, having accomplished this purpose, he allowed himself in retrospect to feel pity for his victim. This point is substantiated by Poe's remarks on how to write a short story; the use of Latin in the story and Poe's characterization of both Montresor and Fortunato. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
