Stowe’s Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Historical Context
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page research paper/essay that examines this novel and its historical context. As the American Civil War was going on, President Abraham Lincoln is said to have commented when he meet Harriet Beecher Stowe that her novel had served as a “catalyst for war.” Reportedly, at the 1862 encounter, Lincoln said, “’So you’re the little woman who wrote the book that started this great war.’” Regardless as to whether or not this anecdote is accurate, it indicates the huge influence that Stowe’s first and best-known novel, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, had on the consciousness of the troubled United States. This novel was very much a product of Northern abolitionist sentiment. Therefore, to understand this novel, it is first necessary to understand the historical context in which it was written. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Struggle -- The Heart of “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” and the Writing of Frederick Douglass
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page
report discusses Harriet Beecher Stowe’s and Frederick Douglass’
American masterpieces. Douglass’ lectures on slavery to audiences
in Great Britain created a great deal of sympathy for the
abolitionists’ cause and prompted his admirers to raise funds to
purchase his freedom. And, of course, Harriet Beecher Stowe’s
heartbreaking story, melodramatic as it is, reached into the
hearts of the “mainstream” American citizens of the 19th century.
When Harriet Beecher Stowe and Frederick Douglass published what
were to become American masterpieces, they could not have
anticipated the fact that their words would forever rock the
Eurocentric world of North America and cause the “average” white
American to be shaken to the their core. Bibliography lists 4
sources.
