August Wilson/Irony in Fences
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that discusses Wilson's use of irony in this play. August Wilson's play Fences is set in 1957, a time when things were just beginning to change in American society on issues of entrenched racial bigotry. The prevailing irony in Fences is that it is the protagonist himself, Troy Maxson, and not society that provides the obstacles or "fences" in his life that keep him hemmed in and unfulfilled emotionally. The fence between Troy and his wife Rose is Troy's infidelity. Between Troy and his son Cory, it is Troy's frustration over his own unfulfilled athletic dreams. There are also fences between Troy and his brother Gabe and even between himself and best friend, Jim Bono. Troy blames society and his own unhappy childhood, but Wilson shows, ironically, that it is Troy who is the builder of his "fences." No additional sources cited.

August Wilson/The Piano Lesson
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page essay that examines August Wilson's play, The Piano Lesson. The writer argues that there are too fundamental perspectives – that of Berniece who wants to keep the piano, which is a 135-year-old family heirloom; or that of her brother Boy Willie – who wants to sell the piano so that he can raise enough money to close a deal on a small plot of land. While both viewpoints are valid – according to their own criteria -- Berniece holds the moral high ground, and by proving this to her brother, she not only gives her own life new direction, but his also. Author’s Ideology as Reflected in Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple” and Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing how the ideologies of Alice Walker and Jane Austen are represented in their novels. Women novelists Alice Walker and Jane Austen provide different examples of how they have managed to represent their own ideologies within their novels. Alice Walker wrote “The Color Purple” in 1982 and conveyed her ideologies of equal and civil rights through the first person narration of the central character of Celie who is a poor, black woman living under the oppression of society and the men in her life. Her character slowly develops a sense of independence that Walker wishes upon her black female readers. In the 19th century, Jane Austen’s novel “Pride and Prejudice” also included Austen’s feminist ideologies in regards to many of the unreasonable and unequal aspects in society in the treatment of women. Because Austen was writing at a time when women were expected to only write sentimental novels however, Austen reveals her ideologies through the minor characters in the book, such as Mrs. Bennet, who through a satirical twist find society’s conventions unreasonable while her central characters are considered conventional and therefore accepted.

Baldwin/Sonny's Blues
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that discusses James Baldwin's short story "Sonny's Blues," which charts the course of the narrator's understanding of his brother. The story occurs prior to the Civil Rights movement when racial bigotry and injustice in American culture was at its zenith. Two African American brothers react to this climate in different ways. The narrator reacts by embracing mainstream values and becomes a teacher. His brother Sonny is not so pragmatic, as he has the heart and soul of musician. When Sonny is arrested for heroin possession, the entire situation is beyond his comprehension. However, over the course of the story, the narrator comes to understand his brother and appreciate his art, realizing that family ties are one of the things that make the hard times bearable.
