James Baldwin/Sonny's Blues
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page research paper/essay that analyzes Baldwin's short story "Sonny's Blues." Baldwin dramatizes how the older brother comes to understand this through his expert use of language. Using metaphor and simile, Baldwin's language becomes analogous to the jazz that Sonny plays, informing the reader, as well as the older brother, about the whole genre of African American expression that is called the blues and why it particularly expresses the life of black people at the time of the stories (the 1950s). Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Jean Toomer's "Cane"
[ send me this paper ]
10 pages in length. Toomer's poetry is often seen as quiet and pastoral, dealing with tranquil aspects of existence. There is however, another side of his work: dealing with racial conflict between human beings. The exact manner in which Toomer reveals this conflict with respect to the
northern section, one can infer that is an integral
component to the author's overall mystique, utilizing such literary techniques as dialogue, imagery, as well as figurative language and pastoral interpretation. Toomer's "Cane," unarguably his greatest work, is a book of rare
lyricism and poetry in which Toomer seems completely in command of both his poetic language and the vernacular he uses for dialogue. Clearly, Toomer shared the same problems associated with race as did his other literary counterparts. Upon looking at a photo of Toomer, one would see a handsome man who could very easily pass for white. Throughout his life, however, Toomer staunchly refused to specify his race when asked to do so; it could be argued that he refused to even acknowledge that he belonged to one. John Fante & Chester Himes, On Anger
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that examines the theme of anger in novels by Fante and Himes. John Fante, in his novel The Road to Los Angeles, and Chester Himes in If He Hollers Let Him Go, both picture angry young men as their protagonists. While both of these characters have their anger at society in common, this is perhaps their only similarity. Yet, in both cases, the authors use their anger as a tool for expressing larger thematic messages. No additional sources cited.
