Naylor & Morrison/Supernatural & Understanding
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page essay that compares and contrasts Toni Morrison's Beloved and Gloria Naylor's Mama Day. The writer argues that in each of these narratives the motif of the supernatural plays an intricate role. In each of these works, the authors explore the concept of reality and use the influence of the supernatural in order to underscore their principal themes, which relate to the importance of family, acceptance and healing. Examination of these works shows that, in both cases, the past is examined and accepted through the medium of the supernatural and it is only then that the protagonists in both narratives can heal and move on with their lives. No additional sources cited.

Nella Larsen's "Passing"
[ send me this paper ]
7 pages in length. Expressing one's feelings on family relationships, love, predestination and following dreams is not such an unusual occurrence; that is, of course, unless one is doing so in the early part of the twentieth century. Back during the time Nella Larsen wrote her groundbreaking story "Passing," these issues were dealt with in the privacy of one's own thoughts. Indeed, it was highly irregular to delve into such concentrated and personal subjects as these, especially in front of strangers. However, Larsen recognized the need to address the sometimes more difficult aspects of life, which she achieved so eloquently in "Passing." Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Octavia Butler’s “Dawn” and the Theme of Slavery
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page report discusses Octavia Butler’s 1987 novel “Dawn” in which she presents the theme of slavery in the service of another beings’ hierarchy and sense of survival and order. “dawn” became the first book in a trilogy, followed by “Adulthood Rites” (1988) and “Imago” (1989). Nuclear war has decimated Earth in “Dawn” and human beings are almost extinct. “People” from another planet arrive and set about saving the humans and restoring the environment of Earth. They place most of the humans into suspended animation so they can begin the laborious processes required for the planet’s recovery. However, the aliens have their own agenda and that is to enslave humans to meet their own needs. Themes of slavery are constantly present in “Dawn” and present a ways to reconsider the horrors and absolute subjugation that is slavery. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
