Ralph Ellison/The Dream at the end of "Battle Royal"
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page essay that discusses "Battle Royal," which is a chapter within Ralph Ellison's classic novel Invisible Man. The novel's protagonist is an unnamed African American man who begins his story by stating that he is socially invisible to mainstream American culture, "I am an invisible man" (Ellison 441). He explains in the first paragraph of "Battle Royal" that this knowledge did not come to him automatically, not as a "realization everyone else appears to have been born with," he had to learn it for himself and this was an excruciatingly painful journey of self discovery, of which the battle royal, which is described in this narrative, was the first awful step (Ellison 441). The chapter concludes with the narrator relating a dream, which he initially does not understand on a conscious level. The dream presents images that clearly indicate that on a subconscious level, the narrator is beginning to understand his grandfather's enigmatic deathbed message and the fact that he, and all black people, were at that time socially invisible. Reading Note for Anna Deavere Smith’s “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992”
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page reading note with some tutorial language (in square brackets) describing Anna Deavere Smith’s book and play “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992”. Anna Deavere Smith’s “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992” is a book based on over 200 interviews Smith conducted accounting the riots and Rodney King beating which took place in Los Angeles in 1992. The book and the interviews are meant as a basis for her one woman play which depicts twenty-five of the fifty interviews documented in the book. The book is divided into several sections which provide various accounts from different perspectives in reaction to the events in 1992. Despite the dire content however, Smith manages to include the right amount of satire, humor, harsh reality and unforgettable characters for the reader and also shows her great range as a writer and as an actor in her characterizations. The book also includes several images from the riots and a chronological listing of the events.
