Milton/On Liberty/Areopagitica
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page essay that summarizes and analyzes John Milton's Areopagitica. It is well known that John Milton is one of the greatest poets of English literature. It is less well known that he is also one of history's greatest proponents of liberty. This is exemplified by his text Areopagitica, which is an impassioned, logical, and persuasive plea for freedom of the press that was penned over a century before the American Founding Fathers institutionalized this principle in government. Examination of this work demonstrates that Milton's arguments against censorship are as relevant today as they were in the seventeenth century. No additional sources cited.

Milton/Rossetti Comparison
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page essay that contrasts and compares works by Milton and Rossetti. John Milton (1608-1674), in his epic poem Paradise Lost, and Christina Rossetti (1830-1894), in her poem The Goblin Market, each present narratives in which women are tempted by sin that is represented allegorically by fruit. In each poem, there are also depictions of acts of love. But while these features indicate that the poems bear similarities, they also have fundamental differences that deal mainly with the poet's depiction of women. Eve is depicted as shallow, easily deceived and not capable of thinking as rationally as Adam. Rossetti's heroine, Lizzie, on the other hand, is clever, self-sacrificing, and saves her sister from sin through her actions. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Milton/Social Critique

The writer argues that to fully appreciate Milton's social perspective, one has consider the historical context of seventeenth century England. Comus was written early in Milton's career in 1634 and reflects his Puritan orientation towards what he perceived as Cavalier licentiousness (Lewalski 56). Examination of these texts demonstrates how Milton hid a subversive, politically-oriented message within both of these works. Bibliography lists 5 sources.
