The Odyssey by Homer: A Summary and Discussion of Two Articles Regarding the Work
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 5 page paper discussing two articles about The Odyssey by Homer. Tutorial language is inserted into the paper using square brackets. In a summary and discussion of Peter Green’s article “Reading, translating, and speaking Homer” (1997) and Paul Cantor’s article “The art in the popular” (2001), both Green and Cantor compare Homer’s The Odyssey in comparison with the literature and entertainment of the time and in the centuries since. Green in his analysis reveals that regardless of translation or critic of the work, all researchers do agree that the work is timeless in the aspect that since it was written, it has been included in almost every work, discussion or analysis since, not only in the field of literature but also in the areas of historical, military or psychological analyses. Cantor, on the other hand, argues that the work is slowly losing its appeal as the popular masses seem to be turning away from classic literature. He further ventures that the “classic” aspect of the work has gained more respectability over the course of history as during its time it would have been considered culturally vulgar, popular to the masses but not accepted by the critics. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

The Odyssey/Travel as Teacher
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page essay that addresses Homer's ancient Greek epic, the Odyssey, and recounts the adventures of Odysseus who spends ten years trying to reach his home after the victory of the Greeks in the Trojan War. However, this epic does not begin directly with the hero, but rather with Zeus recounting the tale of Aigisthos and Orestes. Zeus' brief reference to this tale makes Homer's point that human beings frequently bring misery upon themselves due to human failings and then blame the gods. As this suggests, the point to Odysseus' extensive travels is that he should learn the lesson of humility and avoid hubris. This is a theme that recurs frequently in Greek literature and, in this case, the teacher of Odysseus are his misfortunes en route to his wife and son in Ithaca. No additional sources cited.

The Odyssey: An Epic Tale of the Maturation of Odysseus
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page discussion of the events in “The Odyssey” which contributed to Odysseus’ physical, mental, and spiritual maturation. Notes that because these events were not presented by Homer chronologically in the order of when they occurred, it is difficult to assess the differing levels of maturation throughout the epic. Presents a chronological timeline of a few of these events and comments on their relative influence on Odysseus’ maturation. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

The One: Odysseus and Athena
[ send me this paper ]
Many have called the relationship between Athena and Odysseus in The Odyssey a mentoring relationship, particularly as Athena often takes the form of a character named Mentor, but their relationship has much more depth than mentoring. Theirs is a relationship that evolves from mistaken assumptions between two people, in this case, their roles in the battle of Troy, a role requiring the commitment of shared souls. Therefore, the relationship between Athena and Odysseus is a redemptive one borne of past grievances (storytelling focus). Athena’s need is to redeem the future, while Odysseus’s need is to redeem the past. Together, they fight to protect their present souls so that they can give birth to one soul containing the mortal and the immortal. Bibliography lists 3 sources. JVAthOdy.rtf
