Inward Lives of 2 19th Century Women
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page essay that discusses similarities between Gustave Flaubert's Madame Bovary with his protagonist of Emma Bovary and Kate Chopin's The Awakening with Edna Ponteiller. The writer argues that the reader, with these novels, encounters two female protagonists who each have difficulty reconciling their outward behavior to their inward reality. Western culture at the time of these novels dictated a very restrictive role for women in society, a role that concentrated firmly on domesticity. Both Emma and Edna have an inner romantic concept of what marriage and love are like, which contrasts sharply with the reality of their lives. In both novels, this factor creates tension that provides the thematic impetus for the narrative that unfolds, illuminating each author's perception of what it meant to be a woman in patriarchal nineteenth century society. Jean Paul Sartre’s “The Wall”
[ send me this paper ]
This 5 page report discusses Jean Paul Sartre’s short story, “The Wall,” which takes place during the 1930s in the era of the Spanish Civil War. Three men are arrested, placed on trial, and sentenced to death for rather nebulous political reasons. The authorities are prepared to execute people for little or no reason whatsoever, and this lack of causality -- so predominant in existentialism -- is a favorite theme of Sartre’s. “The Wall” serves as an excellent example of existential writing in that we are what we are, what happens, happens, and what you see is what you get. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Jean-Paul Sartre/The Flies
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that discusses Jean-Paul Sartre's play "The Flies" draws upon the ancient Greek legend of Orestes, as told by Aeschylus in his classic play of the same name. However, Sartre changes the focus of the ancient story in order to stress thematic points that are drawn from his existentialist philosophy. Examination of "The Flies" indicates that the principle thematic points that Sartre makes in this work pertain to his idea existence preceding essence and how this idea can be associated with the concept of freedom (thesis statement). This thematic thrust becomes particularly evident when the overall structure of the play is considered. First of all, Orestes is presented with a predetermined situation over which he has had no input or control. Secondly, he realizes that whether or not he acts is his choice; he is free to choose. He then comes to the realization that by choosing he frees himself, as well as the city. No additional sources cited.
