Government Involvement in the Pharmaceutical Industry
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page paper
discussing anticipated increased regulation of the pharmaceutical industry. Everyone
expected to pay more than they would like for their prescription medications in years past,
but the former Burroughs-Wellcome component of the current Glaxo-Wellcome generated
a public outcry when it first marketed AZT® as the first - and only - drug treatment
available for AIDS patients. AZT was priced far higher than any of the company's other
products. Little did we know then that the formula on which AZT's pricing was set would
become the norm. Government payment involvement already has worked to put the price
of many prescriptions out of reach of those not receiving government subsidy themselves,
and further government involvement promises to restrict market competition even more.
Bibliography lists 8 sources.
