Mexican Film/Maria Candelaria
[ send me this paper ]
A 7 page research paper/essay that discusses Emilio Fernandez’s Maria Candelaria (1943) and how this film relates to the task of addressing the legacy of colonialism within the context of Mexican history. Mexico, as Andrea Noble points out, is fundamentally a “mestizo entity,” that is, it is the product of “the colonial encounter between Indians, Spaniards (and Africans)” (Noble 81). As such, the Mexican culture struggles to understand its fundamental nature and to express the cultural dichotomies held within this paradigm. One of the ways in which this task has been expressed is through cinema. Bibliography lists 5 sources.

Michael Crichton/Lost World
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that contrasts and compares the movie The Lost World with the original book by Michael Crichton. The writer argues that the film, not surprisingly, concentrates on the visual aspects of the story -- heart-stopping scenes where the main characters have to run for their lives from very real-looking dinosaurs. In the book, Crichton goes into more detail on the science behind the story, introducing the reader to the latest theories in paleontology as well as complexity theory in mathematics. Yet, despite minor changes in plot, it is basically the same story in each format. No additional sources cited.

Michael Cunningham's "The Hours" - Virginia Woolf
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. The dichotomy of searching for oneself while at the same time struggling against one's demons represents the foundation upon which Virginia Woolf's character exists in Michael Cunningham's The Hours. The extent to which Woolf endures an internal battle to free herself of such self-imposed limitations is both grand and far-reaching; that she is influenced by the other two women in the film speaks to the value of external inspiration when one is grappling with life-altering quests. No bibliography.

Michael Mann's Movie Adaptation Of "The Last Of TheMohicans"
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The 1992 movie version of James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans" was directed by Michael Mann and starred Daniel Day-Lewis, Madeleine Stowe, Steven Waddington, Russell Means and Eric Schweig. As an epic about human conflict, the movie addresses all the necessary
elements of social, political and spiritual concern required for such a production; however, the grandiose spectacle of Hollywood film making abilities cannot mask the stereotypical Native American imagery blatantly portrayed in this movie. No additional sources cited.

Michael Medved's "Hollywood Vs. America"
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. With astute insight and compelling perceptiveness, Michael Medved brings out the hidden – and not so hidden – backlash that popular culture in general and Hollywood in particular have wreaked upon contemporary society. His treatment of this often-controversial subject matter delves deeply into the idiosyncratic components that Hollywood and the entire essence of popular culture have unduly influenced generation after generation, serving to catapult the notion of personal and social responsibility entirely off the map of humane existence. Clearly, the detrimental impact that Hollywood and popular culture have had upon the masses is more than superficial according to Medved; rather, this power has rendered society a reflection of its existence. Bibliography lists 10 sources.
