Shakespeare’s “King Lear” and Groucho Marx’ “Duck Soup”

Firefly” from the 1933 movie “Duck Soup.” Both rely on the audience’s expectations as part of the larger story. In “King Lear” those expectations are justifiably founded. In “Duck Soup,” expectations are turned upside down and made ridiculous. “King Lear” serves as one of Shakespeare’s darkest tragedies in terms of the madness, intrigue, and political warfare that takes place in the context of the rule of just one man.
