Social Politics and Woody Allen’s “Manhattan”
[ send me this paper ]
This 6 page report discusses Woody Allen’s 1979 movie “Manhattan” and the various aspects of social politics that it portrays. Isaac (Woody Allen) has been divorced by Jill (Meryl Streep) who is now living in a lesbian relationship. Isaac is dating Tracy (Muriel Hemingway) who is 17. But he is intrigued and often annoyed by Mary (Diane Keaton) who is having an affair with Isaac’s best friend, Yale (Michael Murphy), who is married. In typical Woody Allen fashion, convoluted relationships are the norm for complicated and self-absorbed people. In essence, the entire movie encompasses the varying degrees of social contract and interpersonal relationships in which the boundaries are often as convoluted as the individuals within them. Such Brooks classics as "Elmer Gantry" and "The Professionals," along with Loach's "Poor Cow," speak to the notion of social realism and the impact it had upon a changing society. Indeed, these films individually represented a changing class-consciousness related to modifying economic and social conditions of the 1960s, yet they also set the precedence for the decades that followed.
