Kaufman & Ferber/Depression Comedy & Dinner at Eight
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that discusses the classic play by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber. The writer argues that during the Great Depression, comedy provided a surcease from the rigors of daily life (Widner, 1998). However, it was only possible to forget the trouble imposed by the Depression to a certain extent. In their sophisticated comedy, Dinner at Eight, playwrights George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber address the topic of the Depression, but do so by picturing that the economic woes of the country were affecting everyone--even the very rich. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

Kaufman & Ferber/Depression Comedy & The Royal Family
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page essay that discusses theater during the Depression. The writer argues that it was through the warmth and pathos of comedy that people could forget --if just for a little while--the trauma that was going on around them and that this was a psychologically God-send to the country as a whole. Although George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber's The Royal Family (1928) was written during the last years of prosperity, this play was one of the comedies that sustain the nation during the first years of the Depression. Its story of an acting family --the Cavendishes--and the sacrifices that they made for a life in the theater-- was a fantastic distraction from the realities of life during the Depression. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

La Sonnambula
[ send me this paper ]
( 5 pp) La Sonnambula (1831)is one of Vincenzio Bellini's (1801-1835)top three operas among the listening audience, and in tone is certainly the most light-hearted. This is not to cancel in any way the vocal pyro-technics of the bel canto tradition, which appears in this performance. The performers are not power-driven, as one might find on larger stages, but complement this simple story, and yet maintain a liveliness that is true to the more dramatic nuances of Bellini's other works.

Lanford Wilson/Rimers of Eldritch
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page research paper/essay that discusses Lanford Wilson's play Rimers of Eldritch, which, on the surface, concerns a murder and a trial, however, this play encompasses much more than this, as it offers the audience a profile of the social systems and personal relationships that make up this extremely dysfunctional small town. Written in the 1960s, Wilson draws on the social upheaval of that era, but rather than making this play feel dated, it seems quite contemporary as it addresses issues of hypocrisy and self-righteousness in a town in America's Bible Belt. Bibliography lists 3 sources.
