Oedipus And Antigone: Significance Of Teiresias
[ send me this paper ]
3 pages in length. Teiresias' significance in Oedipus and Antigone speaks to the importance of prophecy as it exists in Greek mythology. Teiresias, a famous Thebian prophet, gained his special powers as a trade-off for the blindness Athena cast upon him for accidentally seeing her bathing. Now bestowed with the ability to prognosticate, Teiresias's foretelling becomes an instrumental component in many characters' lives, not the least of which were found in Oedipus and Antigone. The messages Teiresias deliver are not always what the recipients wanted to hear; however, the truth that resides in his disclosures often seeks to alter a given character's entire existence for the better, which establishes Teiresias' most significant contribution to each play. Of Gods And Heroes In The Modern World
[ send me this paper ]
Joseph Campbell, in his 1972
book, Myths To Live By, argued that the individual in search of
spirituality through myths must disengage from the elementary idea by
recognizing each image of God is merely a symbol of the beliefs held by
a culture and is representative of all beliefs stemming from that same
mystery. This 15 page paper argues that myth is more than a symbol or a
format for storytelling - it includes the seeds of change. Through the
development of myths, the modern individual may be able to impact the
future as well as to provide meaning to the present. Bibliography lists
6 sources, all by Joseph Campbell.
